News that the International Olympic Committee has recognized the sport of ultimate Frisbee is creating excitement amongst players on P.E.I.

"This decision is just going to give it more exposure and more awareness," said Sarah O'Neill of the P.E.I. Ultimate League.

"I think people are going to appreciate and learn more about the sport and what it is and what it has to offer and hopefully we'll see a huge turnout in new membership."

In ultimate Frisbee teams compete to move a Frisbee up and down a field. The sport combines elements of football, soccer and basketball.

"Frisbee is gaining huge popularity all over the world right now," said P.E.I. Ultimate League secretary Allison Baillie.

"We have a Frisbee tournament every August here on the Island. It's the Red Island Beach Tournament. This year it's the 22nd and 23rd of August and we have people come from all over Canada and the States to play."

IOC recognition is the first step for the sport, but it is a long way from it becoming an Olympic event.
