A drunk driver who hit and paralyzed a Prince Edward Island woman was sentenced to up to six years in prison on Wednesday in a Pennsylvania courtroom.

Allen Peters was sentenced today to three to six years for aggravated assault while driving under the influence.

Kristen Cameron was coaching hockey at an American college in Erie, Pennsylvania, when the incident occurred. She was thrown 15 metres off her bicycle when she was struck by a car driven by Peters. Her back and neck were broken.

In court, Peters apologized for his actions and their impact. He told the court he wished there was a way he could make up for what he's done.

The district attorney said it was impossible to put a dollar amount on restitution because much of Cameron's care has been in Canada and is covered by the government.

Cameron's uncle, junior hockey coach Dave Cameron, said she's still trying to regain mobility in her upper body.  She is undergoing rehabilitation in a Toronto hospital.

Peters pleaded guilty in March.

The length of time he spends in jail will depend upon his behaviour.
