A new organization has been formed on P.E.I. to help deal with a growing shortage of workers in the trucking industry.

The P.E.I. Trucking Sector Council is planning to gather information specific to Prince Edward Island.

"We have a lot of national data that indicates things like the major driver shortage and obviously there's the aging workforce and all those factors," said executive director Heather MacLean.

"Part of what we'll do is to do some studies and get some real good information on what is happening on P.E.I., and where those shortages are."

MacLean said like many industries trucking is facing the challenge of the migration of workers to find work in the booming economy of Alberta.

Membership is free and a recruiting drive is now underway. An information meeting on the new organization will be held next month.
