The long term care facility will soon welcome a live-in cat as therapy for residents. Andrew MacDougall, administrator for long-term care in Queens County, said the new cat will be particularly helpful for residents with dementia.

"Everyone, no matter what their state is, has needs: emotional needs, needs to connect, to love and feel love and have a purpose," said MacDougall.

"What you see with this is this direct raw emotion that happens when animals are in the presence of residents. They light up."

The Prince Edward Home's pet therapy program already has some birds, fish, and occasional visits from a therapy dog.
