Tackle conflict of interest ASAP, says Opposition leader

Even though P.E.I.'s conflict of interest commissioner has resigned, there is still a need to call the legislature back as soon as possible, says Opposition leader Steven Myers.

Even though P.E.I.'s conflict-of-interest commissioner has resigned, there is still a need to call the legislature back as soon as possible, says Opposition leader Steven Myers.

Neil Robinson resigned over the weekend saying he does not have the necessary confidence of the legislative assembly to continue in his position.

His resignation revolves around an investment he made in a company linked to the province's failed attempt to regulate online gambling.

Myers says there is still a need to call the legislature back into session to give government a chance to strengthen the province's conflict-of-interest legislation.

He says Premier Wade MacLauchlan has committed to make changes to the Conflict of Interest Act and that legislation needs to be drawn up immediately.

"There has to be immediate steps taken to address the ethical cloud that is hanging over the government's conduct over this e-gaming file. This is just one part of it. We still think the house needs to reconvene," said Myers.

"The conflict act has to be tightened up and things have to be changed. Now even more than ever with the conflict of interest commissioner resigning, I think now is the time that the premier has to call the house back and has to deal with this."
