World's longest lobster roll record in question

Both P.E.I. and New Brunswick are claiming the record for the world's longest lobster roll — and neither side appears ready to concede.

The P.E.I. Fishermen's Association claims to have taken the title over the weekend.

As part of the P.E.I. International Shellfish Festival in Charlottetown, chefs created a 23-metre long lobster roll loaded with 34 kilograms of lobster meat and 11 kilograms of mayonnaise.

Organizers had been aiming for a 30-metre roll but came up short when the bread dough was shaped.

But they still believe the roll was one metre longer than the roll created at the Shediac Lobster Festival in New Brunswick in July.

Shediac, however, maintains their record hasn't been broken.

The latest on the Shediac festival website makes reference to this year's attempt.

"Celebrating the 66th Anniversary of the Lobster Festival, the greater Shediac Chamber of Commerce will attempt to break our world record by preparing a lobster roll reaching over 72 feet 4 inches long."

That's 22 metres.

While the web site doesn't update the outcome, the festival's Facebook page claims the roll came in at 85 feet six inches.

That's 26 metres, a full three metres longer than the P.E.I. roll.

The Shediac Lobster Festival president outlined the association's claim in an email to CBC News.

Ian MacPherson with the P.E.I. Fishermen's Association calls the Shediac claim an interesting twist in the story, but maintains P.E.I. still holds the record until he sees definitive proof indicating otherwise.

Settling the dispute could be difficult. The usual arbiter in this case, Guinness, has only a longest sandwich category, and no record that is lobster specific.

The longest sandwich on record — 735 metres long — was made in Lebanon in 2011.
