Rare sighting of humpbacks off P.E.I. shore
Locals and tourists going deep-sea fishing off P.E.I.'s North Shore have been getting an extra treat recently: at least two humpback whales have been joining in the fishing.
Aiden's Deep Sea Fishing takes tourists out on the water to fish for mackerel. But lately, those fishing trips have been turning into makeshift whale-watching tours. Owner Paul Doiron says at least two humpback whales have been feeding in waters off North Rustico.
"The boys were out there fishing away and next we know this big whale comes right out of the water," Doiron told CBC News Friday.
"He was feeding on the mackerel as well. We're talking probably 45, 50 feet (14-15 metres) long, this whale."
Doiron said it's very unusual to see humpbacks off P.E.I., although there was one in the area last year as well. One of Doiron's customers has posted a video on YouTube.
