A local authority has taken over the last major port in P.E.I.

Today, Federal Revenue Minister Gail Shea announced the Georgetown wharf is now in the hands of the Georgetown Port Inc., which is run by a group of volunteers.

The government is also giving the group $3.8 million for maintenance.

Tim Mair, the chair of the Georgetown Port Inc., said their goal is to increase revenues to expand the wharf. Mair said they’ll spend the next year coming up with a plan.

Currently, a fish plant and a mussel operation work on the 290 metre wharf.

This is the fourth P.E.I. port to be handed over by the  federal government. Local authorities already run Charlottetown, Summerside and Souris.
