Plows coming off Prince County side roads

Charlottetown and areas east can expect a further 15 cm of snow before the snowfall ends Thursday morning, says CBC meteorologist Kalin Mitchell.

That could put totals for this storm in the 20- to 25-cm range, says Mitchell.

Heavy snow and high winds are expected to continue until early Thursday afternoon.

The province's transportation officials, who were still trying to clean up from the weekend's storm, continue to deal with drifting snow and whiteout conditions.

At 5:30 p.m., the Department of Transportation said they would be pulling plows off side road in Prince County. The main roads will continue to be cleared until further notice.

Also, the North Side Road, between North Lake and Priests Pond is closed due to zero visibility.

Jimmy Rhynes, operations supervisor for Queens County, said the high winds are the big issue.

"Gusts up to 70 and I think it's supposed to stay around 50 kilometres steady for the rest of the day, into tonight," said Rhynes. The big issue will be the visibility."

"There's lots of big cuttings on the roads and the roads are just fair travelling as it is and this is really going to put a UPEI and Holland College are closed for the day.

Dozens of businesses remain closed and countless community events have been cancelled.

There are also some cancellations and delays at the Charlottetown Airport so travellers should call ahead.

The Confederation Bridge is open, but officials are warning restrictions could be put in place given the high winds in the forecast.

Maritime Electric is not reporting any power outages.
