Summerside police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle-pedestrian accident that happened in the P.E.I. city early Friday morning.

Police said 69-year-old Angus MacDonald died at the scene.

Cpl. Jason Blacquiere said MacDonald was crossing Water Street near Autumn Street at about 6:25 a.m. when the collision occurred.

"It looks like the pedestrian that was killed in the accident was crossing not in the crosswalk," he said. "It was further east of the crosswalk where he was attempting to cross the street and was struck by the oncoming truck."

Driver interviewed by police

The driver remained at scene and was interviewed by officers, Blacquiere said. Police have ruled out alcohol and drugs as factors in the collision.

Blacquiere said the investigation is ongoing and it is too early to determine if any charges will be laid. He said police are waiting on the autopsy report and as well as information from RCMP collision analysts.

Police looking for witnesses

Witnesses were interviewed at the scene, he said, and police are also looking for two vehicles that reportedly passed by the scene in the hopes the drivers can provide more details.

A section of Water Street was closed for a time for the investigation, but it has since reopened.
