New deputy mayor for Summerside
Norma McColeman taking over Jan. 1
The City of Summerside, P.E.I., will have a new deputy mayor in the new year, under a new plan that sees councillors rotating through the role.
Coun. Norma McColeman will take over from Coun. Brent Gallant. She is the second of three who will serve under a new revolving plan put in place after Coun. Bruce MacDougall stepped down last December after almost 19 years as deputy.
McColeman said she is looking forward to the challenge, and the fact that a woman will be in the role, which has not been the case for decades.
"[On] our youth council there's a very strong number of young women, and I feel that it's so important that young women, as well as young men, but that they see women in those various roles," she said.
McColeman will serve as deputy mayor for a year, in 2018 Coun. Frank Costa will take over.
