After a spring-like week, a mix of winter weather is forecast to hit Prince Edward Island Thursday night.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, as well as a snowfall warning for Prince County.

"Light snow will move in late tomorrow afternoon ahead of more moderate snow and even some mixing with ice pellets and/or freezing rain Thursday night," said P.E.I. meteorologist Jay Scotland.

Just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, Environment Canada added the snowfall warning for Prince County.

Light snow will begin late Thursday afternoon over Prince Edward Island, becoming heavy at times over Prince County on Thursday evening and ending by early Friday morning, Environment Canada said.

"The heaviest accumulation looks to occur over western Prince County where 15-20 centimetres is possible," said Scotland.

Most other areas should see between seven to 15 centimetres with lower amounts likely over eastern Kings County where more mixing and even some rain, due to milder temperatures, is possible before tapering off into Friday morning, Scotland said.

Strong easterly winds could reduce visibility as early as Thursday afternoon. Wind gusts up to 90 km/h across P.E.I. are forecast for Thursday night, he added.

The precipitation is forecast to taper to flurries or showers Friday morning, but poor driving conditions could persist.
