A first taste of winter brought a brief power outage and treacherous driving conditions to P.E.I.

Island RCMP cited dangerous driving conditions Tuesday evening as they warned drivers to avoid Route 225 between North Wiltshire and Kinkora, as well as Hunter River.

Police said dangerous and icy road conditions were making it difficult for vehicles to drive up hills, creating traffic hazards.

The mix of snow and freezing rain was enough to get a large truck stuck near the intersection of Route 225 and Route 13 for a little over an hour.

Conditions across the Island are "extremely slippery and visibility is poor," police warned, advising Islanders to stay off the roads until conditions improve.

Just over 5,000 homes in the Charlottetown area lost power around 9:45 p.m. Maritime Electric Kim Griffin said a tree had fallen on power lines in the area.

Crews were able to restore power by 10:30 p.m.
