Man shot in leg by RCMP during altercation in Rollo Bay
More details emerge about incident on Monday afternoon
An RCMP officer shot a 33-year-old man in the leg Monday afternoon during an altercation, say police.
The incident arose after Kings District RCMP received a complaint of a possible impaired driver in the Souris area, said Supt. Mac Richards of the Criminal Operations Branch, "L" Division, in P.E.I.
As part of the investigation, an officer went to a residence in Rollo Bay, where the officer was physically assaulted, police said.
"At that residence an altercation took place which ultimately ended in the officer using his service pistol, striking a male in the leg," Richards said.
The man was taken by ambulance to hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
"The male's been transported to hospital [to] undergo surgery. I'm not certain of his status at this point. The officer was also treated, taken to hospital and released," said Richards in an interview with CBC News.
Investigation ongoing
The RCMP Major Crime Unit has taken over the investigation, Richards said.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) from Nova Scotia — an independent unit that investigates serious incidents in which police are involved — is now on P.E.I. conducting a thorough investigation, he added.
Charges have not been laid against the man who was injured but their investigation is ongoing, RCMP said, and SiRT will determine if criminal charges will be laid against any police officers.
