RCMP are investigating after tires were damaged on vehicles belonging to mayors of two communities in the Evangeline region of P.E.I.

Police say the mayor of Abram-Village had the two front tires on his truck flattened, and the mayor of Wellington had a tire on the driver's side of his car punctured.

Both incidents were reported on April 28.

Roger Gallant, the mayor of Abram-Village, said someone drilled holes on the inside of his two front tires.

"You could see the drill-bit mark in the tires," he said. He said he was frustrated to hear the mayor of Wellington also had his tires damaged.

"Coincidence? I don't know," he said.

There had been ongoing debate about forming one municipality in the area made up of Wellington, Abram-Village and surrounding communities.

More than a hundred people attended a recent meeting on the idea. In a statement released Friday afternoon, the committee that had been exploring the idea of a regional municipality said the idea would be put on hold for now.

Police say they have no evidence to support the vandalism had any connection to the amalgamation dispute.
