Charlottetown Police Services added six new constables to its police force during a swearing-in ceremony at City Hall on Tuesday.

"As our city grows, our need for officers grows," said Chief Brad MacConnell.

The ceremony also celebrated the promotions of four officers and saw three members awarded with the Chief's Commendation Award.

"The job we do is very difficult so it's important that we certainly acknowledge… when your journey starts into this work, but also the milestones along the way and to recognize your accomplishments," MacConnell said.

"We're one of the oldest police services in Canada. We have a long history and we have a bright future."

Municipal law enforcement agencies on the Island have lost some of their members to other agencies, including the RCMP, in recent years.

Charlottetown's Deputy Chief Sean Coombs recently told CBC News that seven officers have left the service since 2023 to pursue a career in law enforcement elsewhere.
