Summerside Free Store finds blankets a hot item in cold weather
'As soon as we fill it up … it always goes'
The Free Store in Summerside, P.E.I., is looking for more donations of bedding, especially warm blankets.
"We have noticed that our bedding, especially, has really taken a hit," said Free Store operator Belinda Woods.
"As soon as we fill it up, and we usually fill it up pretty good, it always goes. It seems to be the first thing that people head for."
Woods first opened the Free Store in December 2016 to help people in need in the city. Steady demand, and the generosity of locals providing donations, have kept it open.
Woods runs the store in her spare time, opening it three times a month. It's a small space that can only fit about 30 people at a time, and people regularly line up to get in.
"To line up in this freezing temperature, you know that there's a strong need," she said.
In addition to bedding, winter clothing has also been going quickly, said Woods.
The store is open every Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for donations.
