Islanders who are watching the popular Netflix show Stranger Things may have noticed something not-so-strange in the final episode.

One of the main characters, police chief Jim Hopper — played by David Harbour — is seen reading the novel Anne of Green Gables to his dying daughter.

It's just one of the many pop culture references in the Netflix-original drama, which is set in the 1980s. The series stars Winona Ryder as the mother of a boy who mysteriously disappears.

The pop-culture references have sparked a lot discussion — and theories — online. For example, one of the key characters in the show is also a young orphaned girl. That fact prompted one website, www.wearesweet.co, to suggest the Anne of Green Gables cameo could be a clue to her identity.
