Alberton mayor resigns, saying he feels he 'lost confidence' of 3 councillors

Alberton mayor Brian Poirier has resigned after just over a year in office, saying he felt he had 'lost confidence' of three of the town's councillors.

Alberton Mayor Brian Poirier has resigned, after just over a year in office.

The former town councillor was elected mayor of the western Prince Edward Island town in mid-September 2023. 

On Thursday, the town issued a news release saying Poirier had resigned effective Tuesday, Dec. 10. 

Poirier declined an interview with CBC News, saying only that he felt he "had lost confidence of three councillors."

According to the town's website, Alberton's councillors are Alan Curtis, Krista Murphy, Jean O'Brien, Maureen Chaisson, Cameron Boyce and Holly Gordon.

Deputy mayor steps in

Curtis, who has been Alberton's deputy mayor, will step into the mayor's role until an election can be held, the release said. During the transition period, the town as asking residents to contact the town's chief administrative officer Donna Thomson if they have issues that need attention. 

The town's first municipal meeting of the year will be held on Jan. 13, 2025. 

Alberton is the largest community in West Prince, home to about 1,400 people.
