Patricia Keenan, P.E.I. cyclist killed in B.C. crash, honoured at rally

A P.E.I. woman who died after a bicycle crash this month has been honoured by hundreds of people in Kelowna, B.C.

Patricia Keenan, 38, originally from Charlottetown, was riding in Kelowna's downtown on July 14 when someone opened a car door unexpectedly. She hit the door and suffered head injuries despite wearing a helmet.

Keenan, a mother to a 10-year-old son, died two days after the crash.

A group of cyclists organized a silent ride called the Critical Mass ride in memory of Keenan and to remind people how vulnerable cyclists are while on the road.

Keenan's mother Alice Sullivan, who lives in Stratford, was happy to hear about the event organized in her daughter's memory.

"It would be something that, if Patricia was still here, she would take part in if it was for someone else. So I thought it was, you know, a very appropriate thing for them to do," said Sullivan.

"I was surprised at the number that actually showed up. I think it was around 200 or a little bit more. She was a very kind, loving, sharing person and very supportive and was involved in quite a few different organizations in Kelowna. A lot of them would have been environmental issues."

A visitation for Keenan was held at Hillsboro Funeral Home Monday.

The funeral will be held Thursday in Cardigan.
