"I am very much looking forward to celebrating Canada’s first National Fiddling Day on May 16, and I ask Canadians from across our country to join me in celebrating this magnificent instrument and the talented fiddlers in whose hands music becomes magic," said Hubley in a news release.

The Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association is "thrilled" about the designation.

"With this Act, Canada recognizes the profound influence that fiddle music has had, and continues to have, on Canadian musical culture and identity," said Graham Sheppard, the association's vice-president.
