P.E.I. provincial museum in 2017 ‘hopefully’ an opportunity
P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz would like to see a new provincial museum as a legacy project when Canada celebrates its 150th birthday in 2017.
A provincial museum was on some wish lists as a 2014 project, including the wish list for the City of Charlottetown, but that didn't happen.
Wednesday's speech from the throne included a note that government is "exploring options" on a possible project.
“We're working on a strategy where, hopefully in 2017 when there will be some federal dollars available, that that's a time when we can look at building a provincial museum,” said Ghiz.
“To be honest it's not our top priority right now, but it is something that we want to do in the future and we think that 2017 is probably our best opportunity for it.”
The governing Liberals first promised a provincial museum during the campaign that brought them into office in 2007. That promise was renewed in 2008, but so far no project has been put forward.
