While the final numbers won't be released until next week, membership to the Prince Edward Island Progressive Conservative Party has at least tripled since Nov. 1.

The deadline for P.E.I. residents to become new members of the party was Friday.

Peter McQuaid, the party's provincial president, said as of Thursday, the number of active members of PC Party of P.E.I. was 6,920. Three months ago it was 2,079.

"I really feel the race has generated a lot of interest back to the party. As a result of that, we've got numbers of new candidates that we're nominating that have never run before — and strong candidates," said McQuaid.

"Everything has contributed to a whole new feeling for the members and that's important because they're the ones that really pass the word around at the end of the day."

People with memberships can renew their memberships on the day of the convention being held on Saturday, Feb. 28.

Advanced voting will take place on Feb. 14 and Feb. 21.

Three people are vying for the leadership: James Aylward, Darlene Compton and Rob Lantz.
