Being out there alone, braving the elements, working with your dog team, it's very relaxing.- Damon Tedford

Tedford, who grew up on the Island, is no stranger to adventure, having served in the military including tours in Afghanistan.

He then went to medical school and is now an emergency room doctor in Vancouver.

However, he moved to Alaska last fall to train full time for the race.

He says there's no life like dog sledding.

"Being out there alone, sort of braving the elements, working with your dog team, it's also very relaxing," said Tedford.

"When you're standing on the runners, there's nothing else around, maybe you're taking in the northern lights, maybe you're taking in one of these sunrises or sunsets."
