P.E.I. MLA salary increase recommended
Pension plan payments to increase
P.E.I.’s Indemnities and Allowances Commission is recommending a salary increase for the province’s elected representatives.
The independent commission is recommending a 1.2 per cent increase to take effect on April 1. That raise will be implemented unless legislation is introduced to override it.
The commission points out in its 2014 report that MLA salaries were frozen from 2009 to 2012, and elected politicians on the Island now earn 78 per cent of what their counterparts in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick make.
The new salaries would range from $68,721 for a backbencher to $143,355 for the premier.
The elected officials will also pay one per cent more for pensions when the new pay scales take effect.
