The Prince Edward Island lobster fishery has received an official stamp of approval from the Marine Stewardship Council.

The Prince Edward Island lobster fishery has received an official stamp of approval from the Marine Stewardship Council.

The certification, which verifies environmentally-sustainable practices, could help the industry secure markets around the world. The certification measures whether the fishery has a negative impact on stock levels, and whether it harms the environment.

MSC certification is increasingly becoming a demand in international seafood markets such as the European Union as well as many of the world’s largest supermarkets and food distributors.

Domestically, food retailers such as Sobeys, Loblaws, Whole Foods and Walmart now have requirements for all seafood to be sourced from sustainable fisheries. MSC is one of the most widely recognized eco third-party certification standards.
