P.E.I. lobster fishermen set their traps
Lobster season still closed in Northumberland Strait due to ice
It has come eight days late, but fishermen on the North Shore of P.E.I. set their traps Friday as lobster season begins.
Ice conditions delayed the start of the season, and ice is still an issue for about 90 fishermen in North Lake. They are not going out over concerns of northwesterly winds and ice which continues to plague the eastern tip of the province.
The season delay also continues for fishermen in the eastern end of the Northumberland Strait, as they wait for the ice to clear.
Those fishermen who were able to get out of their harbours sailed into a beautiful, if chilly, sunny day.
The season usually closes June 30, because that's when lobster moulting usually starts. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says it has not yet received any requests for a season extension.
