P.E.I. fighter Jason Saggo wins 1st UFC bout

P.E.I.'s only UFC fighter won his first match over the weekend.

Jason Saggo defeated Josh Shockley with a TKO in the final seconds of the first round in a bout in British Columbia Saturday.

"It was amazing, you know, it's just your dreams becoming a reality, something I've been working on really hard for the last couple of years and it's finally happened," said Saggo.

"I was able to make my UFC debut, no injuries, couldn't have happened any better way."

Saggo is a lightweight fighter and trains at Wulfrun MMA near Cornwall. He had been in 10 professional mixed martial arts fights, with nine wins and one loss, when he got the call to join Ultimate Fighting Championship under a four-fight contract.  UFC is the biggest mixed martial arts promotion company in the world.

Saggo took the opportunity during one of his post-fight interviews to make a pitch for P.E.I. tourism.

"Go check out Anne of Green Gables, go check out the beaches, we've got it all. It's an amazing tourist destination," he said.

Saggo hopes his contract with the UFC, will be extended if he keeps winning.
