Myers confirmed as Opposition leader

Progressive Conservative interim leader Steven Myers was elected official leader of the Opposition by his caucus on Thursday morning.

Myers acknowledged that the Opposition Caucus has dealt with a range of challenges in recent months, but is confident that they are stronger as a result.

"Like all Islanders do when they hit a bump in the road, we get back up, dust ourselves off, learn from what has happened and move on with a clear focus," Myers said in a news release.

The Tories are hoping this will be the end of months of confusion regarding the party's leadership.

In December Olive Crane announced she was stepping down as leader of the party, but would stay on as Opposition leader. Following complaints that the roles should not be split, Crane resigned as Opposition leader in late January.

Hal Perry was voted Opposition leader by caucus the following day, but failed in his bid to become interim leader when Myers won a combined vote of caucus and the party executive.

As criticism of the schism continued, Perry stepped down as Opposition leader earlier this week, leading to the new vote Thursday.

Perry named house leader

The Opposition office announced several other appointments Thursday. Perry was given the job of Opposition house leader and James Aylward is taking on the role of Opposition whip.

"I am confident these two gentlemen will perform exceptionally well in their new roles," said Myers.

Myers said the Opposition Caucus is committed to their continued efforts of holding government accountable.
