New Brunswick doughnut maker buys P.E.I. bread bakery
The Mrs. Dunster's bakery of New Brunswick has expanded with the purchase of Snair's Golden Grain Bakery of Borden-Carleton, P.E.I.
Mrs. Dunster's, based in Sussex, is best known for its doughnuts, while Snair's produces breads and rolls for retail stores and restaurants around the Maritimes.
"It's a commercial bakery that makes really high-quality artisan bread and rolls. At Mrs. Dunster's we do the same thing, but we do it more on the sweet side," said Mrs. Dunster's president Blair Hyslop.
"It's a nice fit for the company with respect to products."
Two bakeries for Mrs. Dunster's
The 22 workers at the Borden-Carleton bakery have been offered work with Mrs. Dunster's at the same pay, and with somewhat improved benefits.
"We're going to have two bakeries, going forward, both doing what they're best at doing," said Hyslop.
"In the baking business, you find people who are good bakers and know what they're doing, wherever they are, it's good to keep them doing what they're doing where they're doing it."
Mrs. Dunster's intends to invest in improvements at the plant, and expand the sale of Snair's products into New England.
Hyslop said there were no government incentives in the purchase. Mrs. Dunster's is taking on responsibility for a $100,000 loan from the P.E.I. government that was held by Snair's.
