Maritime Electric having trouble reaching power outages

More than 1,000 without power at height of storm

It will be later Tuesday morning before Maritime Electric, P.E.I.'s main utility, can estimate when it will restore power to all customers after a weekend snowstorm.

A total of 620 people were without power in 20 separate communities early Tuesday morning.

At the height of the windy end of the storm on Monday more than 1,000 customers lost power, and repair crews could not get out to help. Blizzard conditions had forced even the plows off the roads.

Crews will be on the roads Tuesday, but access is problem.

"The winds were still howling last night and just the sheer amount of snow that has come down, that has limited our access to some of the secondary roads and it's very bad out there, said Kris Jackson of Maritime Electric.

Jackson says there are areas where one repair will restore power to large groups of people, but there are also individual outages that will slow restoration time.
