Mandatory water meter installation starts in Charlottetown in July
Water meters part of Charlottetown's water conservation efforts
The City of Charlottetown plans to begin installation of water meters in all homes starting this July.
The city has put out a request for proposals from private contractors to take on the job. About 6,000 water meters will be installed over the next two to four years. The city says there will be no cost for the installation to home owners.
"We've allowed the time frame for people to be called and notified. We're not going to go and kick your door down," said Coun. Eddie Rice, chair of the city's water committee.
"We're going to notify you that this is now part of Charlottetown's bylaw, and they will save dollars by being involved in that and paying attention to consumption. So it is kind of a win-win-win for us and for them, or for everybody."
The deadline for the RFP is June 15, and the city hopes to award the contract right away. When the work is complete, all 7,400 residential water customers in Charlottetown will have meters. The city has set a deadline for installation to be complete by the end of 2019.
The city is adopting metered-water in hopes it encourages water conservation. The city has faced criticism in recent years for taking too much water from its main source in the Winter River watershed.
