Flames were shooting out of the roof of a landmark restaurant in Charlottetown at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Flames were shooting out of the roof of a landmark restaurant in Charlottetown at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Traffic was blocked at the intersection of Belvedere Avenue and Brackley Point Road as firefighters tried to contain the blaze at Maid Marian's.

The Sherwood Pharmacy, which shared the building with the restaurant, was the focus of most of the flames. There is no information available yet on the cause of the fire, or whether it started in Maid Marian's or the pharmacy.

Six fire trucks were at the scene. Several major streets feed into the blocked intersection, and two dozen cars were backed up on each road.

Charlottetown-based blogs were busy with discussions of the fire, with the first notice posted at 8:13 p.m. AT.

Maid Marian's, a diner-style eatery, was a favourite with locals, known for its breakfasts, its pie and its healthy dinner servings on its daily special.
