Kensington aims to make tourists stop, not just pass through
Kensington plans to extend visitor centre season
Kensington Mayor Rowan Caseley is looking to give more of the 20,000 cars passing every day through the western P.E.I. town a reason to stop.
Town officials believe the area has been missing out on potential business. Caseley is looking for ways to get people to stay longer and spend more money.
"We think we've got a destination here in Kensington and area that we haven't really taken advantage of, and maybe if we all pull together we'll end up having more and more tourism dollars come into the area," he said.
"There's a lot of people that travel through Kensington, there's something like 20,000 cars a day travel through the central part of town."
Part of the plan is to have the local tourist welcome centre open longer. An event will take place Friday night to help raise money to extend its season. Volunteers are stepping up to cover some shifts as well.
The plan is to keep it open from mid-May until the end of September, a couple months longer than its usual season.
