Islanders will likely have to wait a little longer than usual this year to have their first taste of P.E.I. strawberries because the cold weather this spring has delayed the growing season by about one week.

"Plants were late getting started because of all the snow we had," said Arny Nabuurs, the president of the P.E.I. Strawberry Growers Association.

"But the plants are there. They look good and at this point things are positive. We should have an average to above-average crop this year I would think."

He says it will likely be the first week of July before the first berries are ready.
