Cardigan woman fed up with truckloads of garbage dumped on her land

A Cardigan woman is frustrated after months of finding garbage illegally dumped on her property.

Tara Wood owns a wooded plot of land on the Hazelgreen Road in Cardigan, P.E.I., in an isolated area with no houses nearby.

In the spring she began to see truckloads of garbage showing up on the land, much of it ugly and very heavy.

"There is a mini-barn, there is a patio, a pool, windows, doors, computers, tires, steel, there's beds, there's a roof to a barn," she said. "Yeah, there's a ton of stuff in there."

Wood put up no trespassing signs and blocked the entrance to the woods, but that didn't stop it.

"Now someone has ripped down one of the no trespassing signs," she said. "I don't know if it's the same person or not, but they dumped garbage right in front of the no trespassing signs."

There's now so much trash in the woods, she's faced with a huge clean-up bill, as there is no way she could manage the job.

"I don't know whether to keep the woods, or to sell it, I'm at my wit's end," she said.

RCMP officers have been to the site, and are investigating, but catching someone in the act in a remote spot would be difficult, Wood said she was told.

She's also taken to social media, posting pictures of some of the garbage, hoping someone recognizes something, and comes forward with a tip.

It's not the only illegal dumping going on in the area. Wood's brother owns a lot across the road, and has seen garbage left there as well, she said.
