Ice and snow pose problems for fishing season start
Recreational fishing season opens April 15
Special warnings are being issued by P.E.I.'s Department of Agriculture and Forestry with tomorrow's opening of the recreational fishing season.
Freshwater fisheries biologist Rosanne MacFarlane said many of the bays, rivers and ponds are still covered in ice. Secondary roads and paths that lead to them may be dangerous due to deep snow.
"We don't want to see people take chances and go out on ice that may not be safe. Always know the depth of the ice that you're about to venture out on, check it periodically," said MacFarlane.
"Don't assume that because it was safe yesterday or you saw people out there two days ago that it would be safe that particular day. So we urge people to use caution."
MacFarlane said fishermen should also have life-jackets, safety suits and cell phones with them. Falling into cold spring water can lead to hypothermia and even death.
The biologist also said fishermen should tell others exactly where they are going fishing.
