The first Syrian refugee under the Liberal government settlement program has arrived in Prince Edward Island.

The individual is one of 40 refugees expected to arrive on the Island over the next few weeks.

Susan Nye-Brothers, refugee coordinator for the Diocese of Charlottetown, said the person travelled to P.E.I. after arriving with 160 other refugees in Quebec.

Nye-Brothers said her group and others on the Island are always welcoming new refugees, mostly through private sponsorships.

She added there will be many emotional family reunions over the next few weeks as more refugees arrive.

"They're happy to be reunited with family and in a safe place ... but they still have to live with what their families have gone through, what their children have seen," said Nye-Brothers. "So, it certainly doesn't end with them arriving here."
