Google is marking what would have been the 141st birthday of Anne of Green Gables author Lucy Maud Montgomery today with a Google Doodle.

Montgomery, the P.E.I. author of the famous series of books featuring the charming orphan Anne Shirley, was born Nov. 30, 1874.

The doodle features three videos, one of which will load randomly in place of the Google logo.

  • Anne and kindred spirit Diana Barry with books in the grass.
  • A series of scenes in front of Green Gables house.
  • Anne makes a cake with liniment instead of vanilla.

The Anne Shirley books were an immediate hit, from the time of the publication of Anne of Green Gables in 1908.

The popularity of the stories continues to this day.

Anne of Green Gables is the source material for the world's longest-running seasonal musical, which debuted at Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown in 1965.

On Tuesday, Anne and Gilbert, a musical based on later books in the series, opens at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. That show has run every year for the last decade on P.E.I.

Montgomery died in 1942.
