U.S.-based Aqua Bounty has been waiting for a decision on the salmon from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If the fish are approved, they would be the first genetically modified food animal for sale in the world.
The magazine said it decided to honour the fish because it will reduce the amount of food it takes to grow farmed salmon.
Other top 2010 innovations include the iPad, electric-car charging stations and the plastic fur coat.
