Flag honour for Heather Moyse 'a tremendous fairy tale'
Olympic gold medallist Heather Moyse engendered a lot of P.E.I. when she was chosen co-bearer of the Canadian flag at the closing ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games Sunday.
Moyse carried in the flag with her bobsleigh teammate Kaillie Humphries. The pair repeated their gold medal performance from the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver in Sochi.
One of those watching in her hometown of Summerside was her former high school coach, Garth Turtle.
"It's sort of like the end to a tremendous fairy tale, isn't it?" said Turtle.
"When you think back to all the things that have happened to her, from broken ankle three years ago, get on a bike because she can't run, becomes an international biker, then decides to do this and has to have hip surgery. A year later she's got a gold medal again."
Turtle said always been very good at keeping things in the moment, and playing for the joy of the sport, and he thinks that's probably the secret to her success in a lot of ways.
