Opposition says premier needs to push for replacement ferry
Jamie Fox says Tuesday's temporary problems show critical need for more than 1 working ferry
P.E.I.'s Opposition is calling on the MacLauchlan government to push Ottawa for a replacement ferry for the Wood Islands - Caribou, N.S., run.
PC Leader Jamie Fox said Tuesday's temporary tie-up of the only vessel currently working — the MV Confederation — illustrates the need for a replacement.
The other ferry — the MV Holiday Island — is out of service, getting repairs.
"What happened with the breakdown, that could happen again," said Fox. "And what would happen if there was an accident on the bridge that stopped traffic from flowing from the province of Prince Edward Island? We depend on the ferry. We must make sure the ferry can transport goods now across the Island and also in the event of an emergency on the Island. That's what shows me the premier's not leading in what's going on."
A statement released by the premier's office Tuesday evening said the province is "actively working with all partners, led by the federal government, to pursue additional ferry service between Wood Islands and Caribou."
Ferry service is under federal jurisdiction, and MacLauchlan did aim some criticism at Ottawa.
"The lack of initiative on the part of the Transport Canada and Northumberland Ferries Ltd. is disappointing," the statement continued. "Our government has underlined the necessity of finding a swift solution to Transport Canada and urges them to take all actions to ensure Prince Edward Island's needs are met."
Northumberland Ferries said it has looked at replacement vessel options, but said it's very unusual for any ferry to be unused during a northern hemisphere summer.
The company has said it could be some time in August before the Holiday Island is back in operation.
