Escaped convict Gary Gormley was recaptured Monday in Stratford, P.E.I., after calling police and waiting outside the locked RCMP detachment for officers to arrive.

Gormley, serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, disappeared from Westmorland Institution in Dorchester, N.B., on Sept. 6.

The Mounties say the office is not staffed all the time, and officers were busy with other work when Gormley called between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Officers arrested Gormley when they arrived and he was kept at the Sleepy Hollow jail overnight.

Gormley will likely make a court appearance Tuesday and be turned over to federal officials.

In 1995, Gormley beat and strangled Clifford McIver to death in his Charlottetown apartment.

He was sentenced in August 1996 for that crime to life in prison with no chance of parole for 12 years.

Gormley was eligible for parole in March of this year, 12 years from the date of his arrest. Hewaived that right, saying he was not ready for release.
