Maritime Electric's suspects leak in submarine transmission cable

The P.E.I. Fishermen's Association says it will be closely watching the investigation and repair efforts by Maritime Electric into a suspected small oil leak in one of its two submarine cables connecting the P.E.I. and New Brunswick transmission systems.

Divers are expected to be in Northumberland Strait next week trying to find the location of the leak, which was discovered last week. Repairs will begin after that.   "Anytime there is any kind of a contaminant leaking into the water there is always a concern," said Mike McGeoghegan, the association's president.

"You know we don't know how many litres are leaking in right now, but we are keeping an eye on it, what they have to do in order to repair it. I imagine they'll have to lift a line and probably bring it to the surface and that is always interesting."

The association would like to have been notified by Maritime Electric when it discovered the leak, McGeoghegan said.
