P.E.I. curler Brett Gallant gives up chance to play at world mixed doubles curling championship
Gallant won mixed doubles curling championship with Jocelyn Peterman
Despite winning the 2016 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, curler Brett Gallant of Charlottetown, P.E.I., is giving up his chance to play in the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships.
The world competition is being held in Karlstad, Sweden, and starts April 16.
But Gallant said he can't attend because he is committed to play for the Brad Gushue rink at the Players' Championship April 12 to 17 in Toronto.
"We're not going to be going to the worlds. We both had commitments prior to the season beginning with three or four player teams," said Gallant.
"We declined that spot but there is going to be a really good representative for Canada. I think they are just going to go down the list," he added.
His mixed doubles partner, Jocelyn Peterman, is also committed to play in the same tournament with the Chelsey Carey rink. The Alberta team are the Canadian champions after winning the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
One team that won't be going is Gallant's Gushue teammate, Geoff Walker, and his mixed doubles partner, Laura Crocker, whom Gallant and Peterman beat to take first place at the tournament held in Saskatoon, Sask., April 3.
Gallant said he and Walker both decided their first commitment was to the Gushue rink.
But he added, he now has bragging rights over his team and roommate for a while.
