A western Prince Edward Island landmark changed hands Tuesday. The federal government gave the West Point Lighthouse to the people of West Point.

"It means the West Point Development Corporation owns the lighthouse and it's theirs to do with what they wish in the future," said Allison Ellis, head of the local development corporation.

The corporation has been leasing the lighthouse for years, and has turned it into a popular tourist attraction.

The building comes with three acres of land, and Ellis said construction of new tourist accommodations is a possibility.

The West Point Lighthouse is the first on the Island to turned over to the local community.
