Coin, stamps to mark 100 years of Anne

Both Canada Post and the Royal Canadian Mint are planning to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first publication of Anne of Green Gables.

Both Canada Post and the Royal Canadian Mint are planning to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first publication of Anne of Green Gables.

Two new stamps and a collectors' edition quarter bearing Anne's image will be released later this year.

Alex Reeves of the Royal Canadian Mint told CBC News that 50,000 of the commemorative coins will go on sale in April.

"It is larger than a loonie in diameter and it is nickel-plated steel, so it has a very nice silvery finish and a gorgeous depiction of Anne of Green Gables based on an artist's painting," said Reeves.

Unlike the coin, which will sell for $19.95, the stamps will have general distribution, with a print run of about six million planned.

"The stamps will be sold in post offices across Canada," said Nicole Lemire of Canada Post.

"They are going to be 52-cent stamps, so they are good for all domestic mailings. And if anybody wants to use them for an international mailing they can just put the difference with other stamps."

The stamps go on sale June 20.
