P.E.I. libraries are collecting new and gently used books to give as Christmas gifts this year.

The libraries are partnering with the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance and the Upper Room food bank to include books in Christmas hampers this year.

Culture Minister Hal Perry asked for support for the campaign in the legislature Friday.

"Research has shown that having books in homes increases literacy skills in children. Children borrow books from our libraries every day, but there's nothing quite like a brand new book," said Perry.

"This is your opportunity to help get books into the hands of Island children in need so they can have the joy of reading over the holidays."

Perry said book collection will start this Sunday and run until Dec. 19.
