Charlottetown food trucks hit with noise limits

Styrofoam containers to be banned by late summer

The City of Charlottetown has passed a bylaw limiting the amount of noise that can come off of food trucks, and another banning Styrofoam containers.

Charlottetown council delayed the Styrofoam container ban for food trucks so they could use up supplies already purchased, says Coun. Jason Coady. (CBC)

Coun. Jason Coady, chair of the protective services committee, said the city received complaints last summer about the noise coming off the generators on some trucks.

"We put in the bylaw that they can't be over 70 decibels on site," said Coady.

"When we visit their property, the decibel level can't exceed 60 decibels. Sixty decibels basically is hearing a normal conversation from three feet away."

Council is also banning the use of Styrofoam food containers by mobile canteens. That ban, however, will not be implemented until Sept. 1, so vendors will be able to use up containers they may have already purchased.

In addition, council is promising to have more recycling bins placed next to vendors this year.
