Garth Slysz named one of Canada's top 10 docs
Doctor focuses on chronic disease prevention with patients
A family physician in Charlottetown has been named one of Canada's top doctors.
Dr. Garth Slysz, who practices in the Sherwood Family Medical Centre, will receive the Reg L. Perkin Awards at a ceremony on Nov. 11.
A release from the College of Family Physicians of Canada said Slysz is recognized for his "leadership and the compassion he has for his patients and students, as well as the people of Haiti, whom he supports through humanitarian aid efforts."
As part of his practice, Slysz teaches patients about chronic disease prevention.
The physician has provided health care on missions to Haiti, overseeing clinical team there and sends a regular supply of medications for Haitian clinics.
Slysz is also an associate professor and preceptor with Dalhousie University's Department of Family Medicine, allowing him to mentor medical students and family medicine residents.
Slysz has served as the director of Continuing Education with Queen Elizabeth Hospital for 20 years. He is a council member with P.E.I.'s College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Slysz is one of 10 family physicans across Canada to receive the award.
